Sa ponosom možemo da vas obavestimo da počinjemo novi program koji dodatno obogaćuje program rada AC Beograd! Nakon 5 godina rada u AC Novi Sad predstavljamo vam program "Bussines English Conversation Workshop" koji pruža mogućnosti učesnicima da steknu osnovne veštine komunikacije na engleskom jeziku u poslovnim situacijama।

Počevši od aprila do novembra 2011. godine (april-maj-jun – septembar-oktobar-novembar), sredom od 17.30 do 19.00 časova učesnici će imati priliku da uz priručnik Market Leader Intermediate, sastavljen od stručnjaka Financial Times-a, uvežbaju svoje veštine poslovne komunikacije i korespodencije na poslovnom engleskom jeziku.

O programu..

Počevši od aprila do novembra 2011. godine (april-maj-jun – septembar-oktobar-novembar), sredom od 17.30 do 19.00 časova učesnici će imati priliku da uz priručnik Market Leader Intermediate, sastavljen od stručnjaka Financial Times-a, uvežbaju svoje veštine poslovne komunikacije i korespodencije na poslovnom engleskom jeziku. Priručnik je namenjen razvoju veština poslovne komunikacije i korespodencije na engleskom jeziku za ljude čiji je engleski maternji jezik, ali se pokazao kao veoma koristan i za ostale učesnike kojima engleski nije maternji jezik a dovoljno dobro vladaju jezikom i koristi se u oblasti razvoja ljudskih resursa širom sveta.

O Medijatoru..

Uloga medijatora Slobodana Torovića je, pored vođenja radionice, takva da on posreduje između učesnika radionice i knjige Market Leader. Poenta je da učesnici između sebe što više razgovaraju i oslobode se prilikom razgovora uz brojne savete i sugestije kako da poprave svoj izgovor i nauče da iskažu svoje ideje, misli i inicijative. Ekonomista, sa međunarodnim i domaćim iskustvom i formalnim i neformalnim obrazovanjem na polju medijacije, međunarodnih odnosa i ekonomske diplomatije u Beogradu, Washingtonu i Londonu već pet godina vodi ovakav tip radionice poslovnog engleskog jezika u kulturnom centru u Novom Sadu kroz koju je organizovano prošlo stotinak učesnika, dok privatno nudi svoje usluge ovog tipa poslovnim ljudima i zainteresovanim stranama u celom regionu Balkana. O radionici

Radionica je za učesnike od 18 do 35 godina, zaposlene, nezaposlene i studente. Odabir učesnika vrši se oprobanom metodom i formira se grupa od 30 učesnika raznih profila. Za učešće u radionici učesnici moraju imati barem osnovno poznavanje engleskog jezika, da ga čuju, razumeju i da mogu da se sporazumevaju.Metodologija rada je medijatorska - kao lider grupe Slobodan Torović je u poziciji medijatora izmedju učesnika i knjige. U procesu rada učesnici se podstiču da što vise razgovaraju, greše, nauče da se poslovno izražavaju kroz splet situacija opisanih u knjizi, konverzacijskih vežbi, glume realnih situacija itd. Učesnici će biti deljeni u male grupe od po troje ili četvoro i imati grupne zadatke. Svaki "Unit" deli se na dva dela, prvi je tekstualno/konverzacijski a drugi je predstavlja studiju slučaja (Case Study).

Radionica i sama knjiga nije izmisljena već realna, tekstovi su iz stvarnog zivota poslovnih ljudi i kompanija sa svih meridijana.

Uslov za sticanje sertifikata na kraju radionice stiče se minimalnim učešćem u radu radionice od 70% dolazaka. Test i ocenjivanje ne postoje. Svako onaj ko zalaganjem i dolaskom oplemenjuje rad radionice, radi na sebi u saradnji sa drugima stiče mogućnost sticanja sertifikata od strane direktne institucije ispred kulturnog predstavništva SAD. Kopija knjige će biti obezbeđena od strane AC Beograd.

Cena za učešće na radionici ne postoji već se radi po principu „chip in” – svaki učesnik je u obavezi da u označenu kutiju priloži minimalni prilog od 200RSD po radionici.

People around the world were asked to create short videos completing the phrase, "Democracy is..." Over 900 contestants from 95 countries answered the call! Now it's your turn to choose the winners.

You have until June 15 to cast your votes. Six video producers - one from each region of the world - will win an all-expense-paid trip in September to New York, Washington and Hollywood. Their future is in your hands.

"A Belgrade Patchwork" Photo Exhibition

On Wednesday, May 27th at 6PM American Corner will have an opportunity to present photo exhibition by one of it's most active volunteers - Patricia Andjelkovic.

Knowing Pat Andjelkovic has lived and worked in Belgrade for over 32 years, she's more than competent to present Serbia's capital through photography. There will be over twenty photographs of Belgrade, presenting it in a unique way.

Patricia Andjelkovic is also a teacher, a writer, and the author of three children’s books published both in Serbian and in English by Kreativni Centar. .::. Workshop for English Language Teachers and Students .::. Aligning Assessment with the New Curriculum .::.

This 4-hour workshop will consist of three sessions.

Session 1: What do we test and why?
This session examines assessment and the purposes for which it is used in the language classroom. The focus will be on how assessment can be used to document and support student learning within an established school curriculum.

Session 2: How can we test student learning?
This session addresses the different types of assessment used to assess specific aspects of language. The role of continuous assessment will be explored as well as the use of rubrics to describe and measure language performances.

Session 3: How can continuous assessment be incorporated into the classroom?
Drawing on their own experiences, teachers will discuss how they plan to implement new ideas about assessment into their classrooms. Teacher groups will be formed to support teacher efforts in designing and piloting new assessments.

Moderator of this workshop will be Ms. Anne Katz - English Language Specialist. She has worked for over twenty years as a teacher educator and has taught graduate level courses in curriculum and assessment. She has also worked on educational projects in Algeria, Brazil, Egypt, Serbia, Tanzania, and Ukraine. In her work, she promotes linkages between research and classrooms to support student learning and teacher development.

No matter whether you are a business professional or a student, Business Communication and Skills workshop will help you acquire the language tools which are indispensible for improving international performance where skills such as presentation, negotiating or listening as well as multicultural effectiveness are synonymous with professionalism, team spirit and success.

The first workshop, taking place on February 27 at 5PM, will be devoted to the introduction to business skills and discussion on what skills are necessary for operating in ever more globalised business environment. It will, then, be followed by the covering of one of the most important skills- a delivery of presentation, which will be presented through task-based activities aimed at improving vocabulary and grammar structures of this area, through group work and through active involvement of participants culminating in their actual mini-presentations! Lecture "Race, Multiculturalism and Education" as part of Black History Month program

February is known as "Black History Month" and the lecture "Race, Multiculturalism and Education" is just a part of AC's program on this topic. It will be given on Friday, February 20th at 5pm at American Corner Belgrade.

Our speaker, Dr. Michael Frazier earned African American Experience Expert title, because he has taught, lectured and published on the topic of “Diversity and Multiculturalism in America for over 10 years in higher education institutions, federal agencies, military organizations and before international audiences in the USA, Canada, Sweden, Latvia, Japan and China.

Presentation of Project ''Art Crafts in Function of Developing Local Communities - North Carolina (USA)’’

On Tuesday, February 10th at 7pm, AC Belgrade will host a lecture, presentation of project "Art Crafts in Function of Developing Local Communities - North Carolina (USA) by Saša Srećković, senior custos of Etnographic museum in Belgrade. Lecture will be given in Serbian language.

In purpose of reaching sustainable social and economic development, there are different social issues to be joint in mountain region of North Carolina, where local brand is created in field of art and cultural action. The program is created and managed by organization ”Handmade in America”. Presentation will be followed by video material.

Saša Srećković is senior custos of Etnographic museum in Belgrade, long-range manager of different public programs. He is also involved with cultural management in theory, as well as in practice. He supports wide application of etnology and cultural inheritage in programs of social and economic development (i.e. cultural tourism). He also works on documentaries and films.

Presentation of AC's Programs for Children

American Corner Belgrade had great opportunity to present its program for children at ELF conference (English Language Fellow). It was held from January 22-24 at Pecs, Hungary with more than 20 participants from the region.
Jaime Weiler (ELF and professor at University of Belgrade) and Ana Torma (American Corner librarian) presented "Fun Time for Kids", very successful program for children which was created and carried out from August, 2008. It started with only 2 and now more than 25 kids show up each Monday, when the program is held.

The idea of it is learning new vocabulary, customs etc. through reading stories, participating in conversation, crafting and other activities. Beside learning English language, significant moment is having the program in library, making children accustomed to that kind of environment. That would, hopefully, later lead to using library's resources and other services, i.e. as part of their education. It is the reason why presentation of the program is useful to both English language teachers and librarians.

Through Earth Day activists connect, interact, and have an impact on their communities, and create positive change in local, national, and global policies. Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a half billion people participate in Earth Day campaigns every year.

How the First Earth Day Came About

What was the purpose of Earth Day? How did it start?
These are the questions I am most frequently asked.

Actually, the idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political "limelight" once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day.

I continued to speak on environmental issues to a variety of audiences in some twenty-five states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere, and everyone noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation's political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not.

After President Kennedy's tour, I still hoped for some idea that would thrust the environment into the political mainstream. Six years would pass before the idea that became Earth Day occurred to me while on a conservation speaking tour out West in the summer of 1969. At the time, anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, called "teach-ins," had spread to college campuses all across the nation. Suddenly, the idea occurred to me - why not organize a huge grassroots protest over what was happening to our environment?

I was satisfied that if we could tap into the environmental concerns of the general public and infuse the student anti-war energy into the environmental cause, we could generate a demonstration that would force this issue onto the political agenda. It was a big gamble, but worth a try.

At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, I announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air - and they did so with spectacular exuberance. For the next four months, two members of my Senate staff, Linda Billings and John Heritage, managed Earth Day affairs out of my Senate office.

Five months before Earth Day, on Sunday, November 30, 1969, The New York Times carried a lengthy article by Gladwin Hill reporting on the astonishing proliferation of environmental events:

"Rising concern about the environmental crisis is sweeping the nation's campuses with an intensity that may be on its way to eclipsing student discontent over the war in Vietnam...a national day of observance of environmental problems...is being planned for next spring...when a nationwide environmental 'teach-in'...coordinated from the office of Senator Gaylord Nelson is planned...."

It was obvious that we were headed for a spectacular success on Earth Day.

EVENINGS WITH GORAN MARKOVIĆ

As presentation of just a part of the Serbian filmography, three films directed by Goran Marković were presented in American corner, Belgrade. Mr Marković gave short introduction to each movie, talking about making of it and his experience when visiting U.S.A.

The first film screening was on March 20th presenting „Tito and I“. It tells about Zoran, a ten-year old boy which, as all children in Yugoslavia in the 1950s, can hardly imagine any part of his life without nation’s great leader-marshal Tito. The thing that separates Zoran from other children is the fact that he truly loves the dictator…

As second film audience had chance to see was „Cordon“ on March 25th. Theme of this movie was protesting against Slobodan Milošević’s regime in winter 1996. People on the streets of Belgrade are opposing against police cordon which symbolyzes the uncompromised dictator...

Last film was shown on April 3rd – „Serbia - Year zero“. This film is an essay about life of the author Goran Marković in time of dictatorship of Slobodan Milošević. Autobiographic details, archive materials and video clips from his films overlap in this dramatic testimony about the fate of independent intellectuals in time of torture...

All three film projections were well attended with more than 60 visitors each time. Screenings were followed by cocktails and talk with director himself. Through asking Goran Marković questions and giving their point of view, attendants made this occasion very significant. Members found especially interesting that the movies they saw, were not only presented in world film festivals in Montreal, Venice, San Sebastian, but also won those awards. These events were of great importance not only to members of American corner, but also to U.S. citizens who had a good opportunity to get to know Serbian filmography.

Hannah Arendt: The Life of a Jewish Immigrant in America

by David Pickus (Honors College at Arizona State University)

Hannah Arendt (1906-75) was one of the most important and original philosophers in modern American history. She deeply influenced the way we think about politics, freedom and the idea of totalitarianism. But how did she become who she was? This lecture explores hr life and career. It places special emphasis on hr experience as German-Jew and how this affected her perception of America. It also covers hr understanding of the Holocaust and her efforts to educate the American public about its meaning. We will conclude with a discussion of Arendt's relevance for today's world, not only in the US, but also here in Serbia.

Everyone is welcome.

David Pickus, a guest professor at the Philosophical Faculty, is spending the year in Belgrade on a Fulbright fellowship. He is faculty chair of the Honors College at Arizona State University (USA), where he teaches courses in history and the humanities. Pickus received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago with a specialty in German and Jewish history. He is currently researching the topic of friendship between Serbs and Jews. He also has a special interest in encouraging educational travel and academic exchange.
